Assumptions and limitations

What the estimate assumes

  • The bed is rectangular and spacing is measured center to center.
  • Plants may be centered with about half a spacing at bed edges.
  • Triangular rows are separated by spacing × 0.866.

What it does not determine

  • Irregular edges, obstructions, access paths, and specimen plants are not modeled.
  • Plant size, habit, climate, and maintenance goals determine suitable spacing.
  • A final planting plan may reposition plants for appearance and site conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What is on-center spacing?

It is the distance from the center of one plant to the center of the next.

What is triangular spacing?

Alternate rows are offset by half the plant spacing, forming equilateral triangles and usually fitting more plants than a square grid.

Does closer spacing mean faster coverage?

Often, but it can also increase cost, competition, disease pressure, and maintenance. Follow appropriate mature spacing guidance.
